“Saree”...I am not sorry!!!

Right from my early 20’s, I have been very much fascinated by this thing called "Saree" and I used to enjoy watching women in Sarees. For me it is the sexiest garment that India has given to the world of Fashion. In India every region has their own unique way with it and the way it is presented is very pleasing for the eye. Based on what I have seen so far, will try to categorize them as below mentioned.

1. 10/10's: The Saree looks so perfect on them, you feel as if the weaver had this woman in mind when he was weaving the Saree. Each fold of the Saree enhances their beauty and feels as if the Saree is so proud and happy to hug these women. Recently seen a picture of Sushmita Sen, while she was attending a Durga Puja somewhere in Mumbai (it was this picture that gave me the idea to write on this topic), what I felt was, A simple Saree that was carried off very well and she surely has elegance.

2. Rappers: Just a fancy name for "Wrapping". Here it is more about the way they wrap the Saree around. They cover each inch of their body with the Saree so meticulously and very efficiently hiding the gap between the waist and the blouse in miraculous layers of the Saree. Makes you wonder if they are wearing one Saree or two! Can also be more close to how the Egyptians wrap the mummies?

3. “Pleat” Fleet: Called "Kuchchillu" in Telugu. These originate at the waist and must be equal to the number of pleats that end up at the feet. More over it is like violation of law (Say “THE Pleat Fleet Law”) if the count does not match. Ladies over here in this category have the panache to carry it off effortlessly and for those few unlucky ones, they start well at the waist but slowly lose way near the knees and end up in modern design at their feet.

4. Lady Luck: Over here the women, no doubt wear the Saree well, but somehow forget the Raghu’s First law of Garments…It goes like this “A garment is held in shape and in place until and unless acted upon by an force called tugging”. Unwanted tugging at it will render it out of shape and at times the beauty is lost. There are few who while wearing the Saree, venture into tasks fit only for highly trained professionals, such as catching a running bus, moving furniture around and so on. As a result, 15 minutes later, the Saree starts to look like it may fall off anytime. (But it never does, so no use following them around)
On the Running bus line I remember my degree Teacher (again no names will be revealed) she used to teach us ‘C’ language, according to my ratings on Saree, she will be 10/10’s, she used to run for buses at times and believe me or not, she was quite good at it with a “Saree” and no doubt the bus had to stop seeing such a gorgeous lady running towards you…who wouldn’t stop.

5. Pin it: These are the one who use a reasonable amount of pins to keep the Saree in place and to prevent any accidental revealing of skin. It is a miracle how they manage not to tear the Saree every time they move around.

6. Two to Tango: Here in this category is not about the style of wearing a Saree but about the act of wearing it. There will always be those few “More” experienced, who are skilled enough at the art of Saree wrapping that they can manage it on their own and teach others as well. The “Other” fresher’s take help of these valuable scarce resources into the dressing room to help them wrap the Saree. I ABSOLUTLY don’t have any problem with that, except that nobody ever asked me to help.

7. I, Me, Myself: This one should be the latest category. Over here the woman believes in herself and her gut instinct that she can guide herself through this cryptic art of Saree wrapping. May be they even take help of Google...Common lady Google it!! “How to wrap a Saree around” [That was only an example…Please try better phrases]. Now with Google on one side and lot of imagination and belief in oneself on the other side, they march forward and become their own Guinea pigs. The end results could go either way but we only get to know of the successful attempts and they all look stunning.

Last and the most ancient I should say is the below:
8. Navel Novelty: I will dare and say it as a lost art but my ever humble “Bolly, Tolly & Kolly” wood people are playing their part to keep this rare category alive. Really must adore the talent of the designers and ever increasing talent pool of heroines who manage the Saree to stay put in that position all along. Occasionally get to see them in daily life, some by casual slip and some by formal attitude.

All said and done….For me it is more like a tease and all about knowing what to show and what to conceal.
