Chaduvu Sandhya

Today morning I was taking a walk around the house, while brushing teeth and overheard my immediate neighbors talking about teenagers. Their conversation was going in Telugu and one of them happened to say “eee kalam pillalu bothigaa chaduvu sandhya lekunnda pothunnnaru andi”, the very mention of these words made me smile as I also got to hear these lines a lot from my parents. Few seconds later I enter the scene and I with my frothy white mouth with the tooth brush still inside, bend my head forward, try giving them a smile and move out from that place. Now what is there in the line that made me smile is, the way I see the very lines at two different stages of my life. Even before I tell you the difference in my view point “Then & Now” I will try to get you a brief understanding of those lines in English. Basically what they are trying to convey here is teenagers these days are having no proper sense of education and time. The two words here “Chaduvu” & “Sandhya”, the first word obviously means and talks about education but for me the problem starts with the second word. Will try giving my view point on this below:

Some general information before I give my view points:

Chaduvu >>> Education (Pretty straight forward)
Sandhya >>> Evening, Evening time, can also be a name of a girl
GK >>> As far as my knowledge goes these lines are, most of the times, used for the boys. As girls (in those days) used to be the more restricted, obedient and well behaved ones.

Then:
The two words I mentioned earlier are part of a common saying in Telugu language and are used in different sentences and different ways. Back then in my teens when my parents used to say this to me, I asked my Mom what is the meaning of this? The general thing we got to know is that we need to be good at education and be at home in time, which is before evening. For us 9 PM was like the dead line (extreme) after which if you are still late then there would be a big Q&A round with the parents and all necessary investigation would be done. The main catch point here, that was told to us, is if you are following the above mentioned, this would be a sure shot high way for success in your life. Now, as an evident result, I was not so very good at both the things; was an average student all though and rather than following a strict education regime I was more of a punctual in coming back in home at time. May be was lost in confusion as which one to be followed.

Now:
After all these years and so far to my understanding of things, I have come up to a different kind of understanding to those words and lines. For me, now still the meaning of “Chaduvu” remains the same but “Sandhya”, for me now resembles a woman and nothing to do with evening or the time you come back home. As I see there are only two ways to it, either education or woman (word may sound plural but I only intend to say ONE). Yes, TRUE LOVE towards either education or your girl will make you do things that you have never done, i just suppose that there is no need to elborate more here. And all the remaining will end up writing blogs like these giving their own versions.

May be the good old people figured this out very well and gave out this statement, and feels like the main essence of that line was lost in transition over the period of time but who so ever got the essence of it have come out with flying colors. Now you know what “chaduvu sandhya lekunnda tiragatam” is? Now go get busy!!!

  4. Rocked it, as always! Now the sanskrit poem that I read few years ago makes sense - "Anna daanam maahaa daanam, Vidya daana mathahparam" which means - Anna daanam is good but only second to Vidya daanam..!

There is another line in the poem which I shall tell you when we meet this time :)

  5. chaduvu sandhya means reading & sandhya vandanam which was taught in gurukulam in the very olden days. Students used to do sandhya vandanam in morning & evening. that is the actual meaning. this is basic telugu knowledge. stop coming up with your own idiotic interpretations.
